Indigenous people relieved white males remain arbiters of what constitutes racism

Indigenous people across the country are breathing a collective sigh of relief as white, mostly older males remain arbiters of what is or isn’t racism.

“Yeah, I was almost outraged because of that latest display of racism, but luckily this old white guy came along and told me why I was wrong and how it wasn’t racist,” said Ellen Abigosis, a member of the Broken River First Nation in Manitoba.

“I feel like I really dodged a bullet there thanks to that outspoken older white male.”

Media, meanwhile, still grapple with the issue.

Though several American outlets published headlines describing situations as racist and not ‘racist,’ as is tradition, Canadian media stuck to the standard ‘condemned as racist’ or ‘racially-tinged.’
