Feds, provinces reach deal to give First Nations 0% of pot tax revenues

Finance Minister Bill Morneau has worked out a deal with the provinces that sees First Nations get 0% of legalized pot tax revenues.

Under the deal, announced Monday, provinces and territories will get 75 cents of every dollar collected in excise tax levied on cannabis for the first two years. First Nations will get 0 cents.

“Zilch, nada, zip,” said a smiling Morneau. “Look, I think Prime Minister Trudeau said it best, First Nations don’t want to generate revenues — they want a place to store their canoes and paddles.”

A spokesperson for Crown-Indigenous Affairs said the government understands the frustration from First Nations and vowed to begin a consultation process, just as soon as the feds wet their beak a little first.
