Facing mounting pressure to say something, anything, about Kinder Morgan’s TransMountain pipeline expansion, the head of the Assembly of First Nations sat in his office alone on Tuesday, patting and caressing a memorandum of understanding signed with the federal government in 2017.
“Looks like it’s just you and me, pal,” National Chief Perry Bellegarde said, his eyes misting as he remembered signing the MOU with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“I feel like you’re the only one who truly understands me.”
While it appeared he was about to call his communications staff into the room to draft a statement at 11:00 am et, Bellegarde instead dimmed the lights a little more and held the MOU to his chest.
