‘If you ignore last decade, Conservatives have great relationship with Indigenous Peoples’: Scheer

The leader of the federal Conservatives says his party has a great relationship with Indigenous Peoples, if you would just ignore the last decade of their rule.

Scheer was speaking to reporters following his speech to Chiefs gathered for the Assembly of First Nations special assembly in Gatineau last week.

“If you just close off that part of your collective brains that remembers the country under former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the fractured, hostile relationship with Indigenous Peoples, then yes, our party has always been their friend,” Scheer said.

“You almost have to close your eyes and just work through it.”

Scheer wasn’t the only one asking Chiefs to perform mental exercises. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also addressed the assembly and asked Chiefs to remember his government’s failings as smashing successes while NDP leader Jagmeet Singh wanted the crowd to pretend there were no other parties in the country.
