Reconciliation, continuing to over-police Indigenous communities top priority: new RCMP commissioner

September 7, 2018

The new head of the RCMP said that reconciling with Indigenous Peoples while at the same time continuing to over-police Indigenous communities is going to be a ‘juggling act’ but is her top priority.

“I’m not saying it’s going to be easy” said Brenda Lucki, who was sworn in on Thursday.

“But we have to build trust within the same communities we are criminalizing.”

Lucki said one of her first orders of business will be to take a hard look at how the force deals with Indigenous communities and could mean new policies. She said the force is considering creating a policy where one officer hugs an Indigenous person while another officer slaps the cuffs on them.
