Trudeau updates mandate letters: ‘No relationship is more important to Canada than the one with Indigenous Peoples and our lawyers, police’

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has updated the mandate letters that guide Liberal cabinet members, a spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday.

The statement “No relationship is more important to me and to Canada than the one with Indigenous Peoples” will now read ” ‘No relationship is more important to Canada than the one with Indigenous Peoples and our lawyers and police.”

The changes come amid the federal government’s continued legal battle against Indigenous children and a raid by militarized police on a camp set up by Wet’suwet’en Heredity Chiefs.

Reaction from the head of the Assembly of First Nation was swift.

National Chief Perry Bellegarde tweeted a response that was somehow simultaneously supportive and critical of the updated mandate letters.
