Liberal backbencher says he’s purchased new smartphone just in case Trudeau’s call didn’t go through

Liberal backbencher Robert-Falcon Ouellette released a statement on Monday announcing that he’s purchased a new smartphone, just in case Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hasn’t added him to cabinet because his calls aren’t going through.

“If I miss that all-important call letting me know that I’m being called up to cabinet, it won’t be because it didn’t go through, or my flip phone didn’t have minutes or something” Ouellette said in a press release.

“Because I’m so totally ready at a moment’s notice to serve in cabinet, what with all the recent vacancies.”

Ouellette’s announcement comes on the heels of the high-profile departure of Jane Philpott, the former Indigenous Services Minister who resigned from cabinet on Monday amid the SNC-Lavalin scandal.

According to the statement, sent in an email that cc’d the Prime Minister’s Office, Ouellette has also cleaned out his mailbox just in case Trudeau wants to let him know electronically.
