A Winnipeg woman whose ancestors were part of the theft of an entire continent is pretty sure that an Indigenous person browsing in the shop where she works is shoplifting.
“I’ll just pretend to straighten the shelves here where I can see them looking at that bottle of shampoo a little too long,” said Kate Pasina, whose forefathers devoured land in North America thousands of kilometres at a time.
“That bag of cotton swabs was also a little too close to their bag,” she added.
Breathing a sigh of relief when the Indigenous person left the store, Pasina went back to stocking shelves which are built on land obtained through the signing of treaties with First Nations which were never honoured.
