Métis leader upset Trudeau won’t get any cake he baked for cancelled meeting

A prominent Métis leader says he’s deeply disappointed that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won’t get any of the cake he baked for a meeting of Indigenous leaders and government that was set to take place on Thursday, but was cancelled because of the global Covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s really too bad because I worked really hard on that cake and I made everything from scratch, the batter, the icing, everything,” said a visibly upset David Chartrand, president of the Manitoba Métis Federation.

“The icing is real icing, none of that pre-made canned stuff — I was going to share it with everyone, too, not just the Prime Minister.”

Chartrand told reporters that he excitedly carried the cake all the way to Parliament from the Métis National Council offices in Ottawa, where the cake was lovingly prepared and baked.

He described his heart dropping when he heard the meeting had been cancelled and putting the cake down, where it remains untouched as of Friday morning.
