Canadians are reacting with horror and disgust as the United States Border Patrol forcefully separates families from their children, a widespread practice that lasted a century in this country’s residential schools system – and that continues today through the child welfare system.
“What kind of a place separates a child from their parents and then tries to justify it by saying it’s done in the name of God and country?” asked Jennifer Hanson, a non-Indigenous Manitoba woman who lives a few kilometers from the former site of a residential school where thousands of Indigenous kids were abused.
“It’s just unthinkable.”
Many more Canadians also took to social media to express their outrage at the United States, completely ignoring the fact that there are more Indigenous kids in child welfare today than at the height of the residential schools system.
