‘Think of it as an historical re-enactment’: Regina park cleared of Indigenous demonstrators before Canada Day

A Regina camp set up to draw attention to the disproportionate number of Indigenous kids in the child welfare system has been cleared by police to make way for Canada Day celebrations, allowing residents to engage in drunken, delirious revelry free from inconvenience or guilt.

“What better way to mark Canada Day than to clear the plains of those pesky Indigenous Peoples who are demanding a better life for their children,” said Saskatchewan Justice Minister Don Morgan.

“Think of it as an historical re-enactment.”

The city had originally planned to tell Canada Day celebrants that the camp was itself a cultural display but the demonstrators refused to play along.
