Federal Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett batted away suggestions that she is interfering in the election for Assembly of First Nations National Chief after she was spotted counting ballots.
“This is just misguided,” Bennett told reporters as she emerged from the counting room at Vancouver’s Canada Place, where the election is underway.
“My job as Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister is to help First Nations and what better way than to roll up my sleeves and pitch in?”
Now, four of the five candidates have lined up against the incumbent, Perry Bellegarde, telling the chief electoral officer and the group’s attorney that they want a recount and for Bennett to leave the curtained-off area she has been sitting in during the election.
