Listuguj filmmaker’s ‘gritty, blood-soaked’ Beachcombers reboot shocks critics

Filmmaker Jeff Barnaby’s reboot of the iconic Canadian television series The Beachcombers has left many critics shocked.

The rebooted series, which begins airing on the Indigenous Peoples Television Network this month, sees the much-loved characters Jesse Jim and Nick Adonis as log salvagers who battle against the treacherous Relic, who heads the local meth trade.

“This gritty, blood-soaked remake has left me shaken to my very core,” said CBC’s arts critic Eli Glasner. “I don’t want to give away too much but a scene in which Jesse Jim uses a fishing line to strangle Relic is as horrific as it is chillingly beautiful.”

Barnaby, a member of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation, is best known for his films The Colony and Rhymes for Young Ghouls. He was unavailable to comment on this story because according to a spokesperson he is busy working on his next project, a romantic comedy.
