Seamus O’Regan upset over delay in having Indian Affairs Glasses named in his honour

Indigenous Services Minister Seamus O’Regan is disappointed that he won’t have a line of Indian Affairs Glasses named in his honour, at least not before the federal election.

The eyewear, provided to First Nations people by the federal government, are known for their rectangular wire rims and uncommonly thick lense — seemingly no matter the prescription.

Traditionally, the glasses are named in honour of whomever is head of the federal government’s Indigenous office at the time.

“It’s obviously disappointing,” O’Regan told reporters. “I mean, Carolyn [Bennett] and Jane [Philpott] got theirs almost immediately after assuming the office and yet I need to wait? Come on.”

A spokesperson from the Privy Council Office tells Walking Eagle News that the Seamus O’Regan Collection is in development but on hold pending the outcome of the next federal election. In a break from tradition, the Seamus O’Regan line will also include aviator shades since the Minister of fond of flying over Indigenous communities.

In the meantime, the Carolyn Bennett Collection is still available in optometry shops across the country. However, the Jane Philpott Collection has been quietly pulled from shelves.
