The relentless parliamentary workload, high-stakes political environment and marathon voting sessions that leave Canadian politicians ‘dangerously fatigued‘ is being blamed for the continued oppression of Indigenous people, several Members of Parliament announced on Monday.
“I would never have ignored mercury poisoned First Nations or allowed the chronic underfunding of First Nations kids in care if I wasn’t so damn tired all the time,” said Winnipeg Liberal MP Melvin Chena, wiping sleep from his eyes.
“I mean, I’m sure it’s terrible for Indigenous people but I’m really worried some poor MP is gonna die from being so dangerously fatigued.”
Some Conservative MPs also chimed in, blaming the hostile relationship with Indigenous people during their decade of rule on lack of sleep. The New Democrats and Greens, meanwhile, issued statements preemptively blaming fatigue on any transgressions should they be elected.
Although the House of Commons has risen for the last time until after the upcoming federal election, some MPs are pushing for one last day-long emergency debate that could legislate nap time for elected officials.
