Justin Trudeau’s bold strategy of spending millions fighting First Nations children in court so the government doesn’t have to provide equitable care has paid off.
After Monday’s election, the Liberals will form a minority government.
“It was a real gamble ignoring all those Tribunal orders to fix that truly horrific inequity and then launching an appeal of another order to pay compensation because we dragged our feet for so long,” Trudeau told reporters after the final ballot counts came in.
“But man, did that strategy bear fruit. Choose forward!”
The Liberals also credit not reaching a deal for a treatment centre for people from Grassy Narrows who are suffering severe health effects from mercury poisoning, and Trudeau insulting a survivor who demanded action, for their win.
However, when asked whether the Liberals will now act on these issues and others facing Indigenous communities, party leaders said that it will be difficult now that they don’t have a majority so you should have voted for them.
